Explore the beauty of time and decay through intimate analog glimpses of the city.
Finding poetry in the unnoticed
Olivier Tuinier (1982) is a photographer born, raised, and based in Amsterdam. Specializing in analog documentary and street photography, his practice is rooted in a fascination with transience and the beauty of decay. In 2025 he received the DuPho SO’25 Award, and his work has been featured in Fresh Eyes (GUP Magazine, 2024), PF Magazine (2025), and State of Amsterdam Magazine (2024). His photographs have also been exhibited at Haute Photographie (now Hungry Eyes) in 2024 and 2025.
Tuinier’s artistic journey began when he started carrying a small analog camera with him every day, a habit that transformed the way he experienced his surroundings. Through this lens, he became attuned to the unspectacular and the unfiltered, to fleeting contrasts and overlooked details that quietly shape the urban environment. His photography celebrates the subtle beauty of the ordinary, reminding viewers to pause and take notice.
For Studio UK Editions, Olivier presents works from his ongoing series Take Notice, including Tunnel and Summer Dump No. 1. These photographs highlight small street scenes that might otherwise remain invisible in the visual overload of contemporary life. Rather than focusing on dramatic events or obvious beauty, Tuinier turns his attention to modest fragments of the everyday, capturing the delicate poetry hidden within overlooked spaces.
olivier tuinier IN His own words
-
"My inspiration comes from the city and small encounters on the streets, especially in Amsterdam Nieuw-West, where I live. It’s a neighborhood of contrasts and contradictions. I’m rarely inspired by things that are polished or conventionally beautiful; I’m drawn to what’s raw, lived-in, and layered with history."
-
"I rarely plan ahead. I work best when I stumble upon something, take a few photographs, and keep moving. I always carry a camera and mostly work analog, so the results are unpredictable. Over time, patterns emerge, and these spontaneous images coalesce into series."
-
"Alongside my ongoing series Take Notice, I’m working on a new series called Patina. It explores how time leaves traces in the city—oxidation, wear, and overgrowth give character to places and objects that no one designs. I’m fascinated by the beauty of decay and the layers that accumulate as the city evolves."

"I hope to travel more, discovering new cities and environments to photograph, expanding my visual vocabulary and understanding of urban life."
