Step into forgotten stories and images, brought vividly to life through collage and paint.

Reviving forgotten images and stories

Timothy Voges (CW, 1993) is a visual artist who earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Utrecht School of the Arts. Since graduating, he has focused on uncovering and reimagining forgotten images, photographs, and stories—primarily drawn from his collection of old books and Antillean archives. Nostalgia is central to his practice, approached as a potent emotional trigger that evokes longing for the past and a desire to relive faded memories. Through collage and oil painting, Timothy breathes new life into these fragments, weaving cultural elements from his heritage into each work.

For Studio UK Editions, Timothy presents two works that embody this interplay of history, myth, and memory.

Maron is part of a series exploring the folktale of Èzè, a shape-shifting figure who sheds his skin and roams the island seeking newborn lives. By referencing rituals like the scattering of sea salt to ward off spirits, the work evokes both myth and collective memory.

Barba Shó II draws from a generational story of perseverance: a young bull confronting the dominant bull of the land, embodying resilience and triumph. Through these works, Timothy invites viewers to immerse themselves in forgotten narratives while reflecting on the relationship between history, myth, and personal memory.

timothy voges: IN His own words

  • "My work is inspired by the past—images, habits, and stories that have faded over time. I’m fascinated by the strange, almost alien feeling these memories evoke when seen in a contemporary context. Nostalgia, and the tension between what was and what is, is the emotional thread I seek to convey."

  • "My process starts with browsing. I have a large collection of old books, magazines, and photographs, primarily from the Antillean archives. From these, I discover forgotten narratives and visual fragments. I cut, collect, and rearrange these elements, translating them into collages and oil paintings. Each work is built from these fragments, balancing reverence for memory with my own interpretation and artistic voice."

  • "Currently, I’m preparing for my first solo exhibition this fall in Curaçao. It will be the first time I present my work in the place that inspired so much of it—a full-circle moment for me, connecting my personal history with the island’s stories and culture."

  • "I’m always curious about new techniques and crafts. My ambition is to learn as much as possible, exploring different methods and perspectives to expand how I approach my work. I dream of collaborations and experiments that push my practice into new materials and ways of seeing."
